Alphonsus Nweze

The President-General of Bridgehead market, Onitsha, Anambra State, Hon. Chinedu Ezekwike, has said that the market embarked on sanitation exercise as a way to support the Anambra State Government in its effort to clean the State.

He said that the market has been organising sanitation exercise in the past within different markets in Bridgehead but this time, they had to engage in intensive exercise to ensure a general cleaning of the market, involving all the traders.

“This is more intensive and special and that is why every union was closed down and joined the exercise.

“As you can see, everywhere is neat. All these is to support our Governor in his effort to cleanse the State. We are doing our own beat by not only cleaning the market but to support the Governor in his effort to clean the State especially Onitsha.”

Ezekwike said that general cleaning of the market would be a continuous exercise.

He commended leaders of various markets and traders for their support by coming out to participate in the exercise.

He advised traders to take adequate precaution against sudden fire out break in this harmattan season.

Ezekwike gave the advice while addressing newsmen in his office shortly after the sanitation exercise on Thursday.

He said: “I want to use this opportunity to urge traders to always switch off all electrical appliances in their shops before going home in order to stem the tide of fire outbreaks.
As harmattan is already with us, it is dangerous for any trader to on electric appliances in his shops and go home. It is dicey.”

The President-General said that traders in the market are impressed with his stewardship and opined that when a good leader is enthroned, the followers become happy and when a leader leads well he would attract more support.

“We take decision on democratic principles.
Any decision taken in the market since I came to this office is always based on consensus. All of us must agree with a decision before it is carried out. I can’t make single opinion without all of us agreeing and that is why everybody joyfully participated in the sanitation exercise.”

He cautioned the traders to take precaution on how they run their businesses.

“My advice is that we should be focused in our business activities, especially this yuletide season.

“God said, I will bless who I want to bless so, take it easy and apply fear of God in your business,” he admonished.

He prayed that God in this season would replenish every trader in the market, especially those whose shops were razed by fire and others who in one way or the other lost anything this year and during sit-at-home.

Some traders in the Market who spoke to Prime Pointers’ reporter commended the President-General for his initiative in introducing the general sanitation exercise.
Some who spoke on the sanitation include, Christopher Anyanti, Second Task Force Timbers line, Mrs. Beatrice Nwankwo, Odigbo line, and Mr. Cajetan Eze, Ogbogwu Line, amongst others.
